Australia to Decide on Palestinian Recognition Without Trump Consultation, Says PM Albanese

by admin477351

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has confirmed that Australia will make an independent decision on whether to recognise Palestinian statehood without seeking input from former U.S. President Donald Trump.
Albanese clarified that Australia is a sovereign nation and will act in its own interest, especially in matters of foreign policy. His comments came amid speculation over whether Australia would align with allies such as the UK, France, and Canada, who may formally recognise Palestinian statehood at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly in September.
The Prime Minister stated that Australia’s recognition of Palestine would be solely aimed at advancing a two-state solution, which he emphasised would depend on a ceasefire, the dismantling of Hamas, and the release of hostages taken in October 2023.
Albanese also spoke directly with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas to stress Australia’s support for an immediate ceasefire and reiterated the country’s long-standing commitment to peace through a two-state resolution. A meeting between the two leaders is expected during the UN summit.
Meanwhile, Albanese is also seeking direct talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to present Australia’s position at the highest level.
