The principle of “peace through strength” has become the central, unwavering core of President Volodymyr Zelensky’s renewed appeal to the West. He argues that while diplomacy is the goal, it is an impossible one to reach unless Ukraine is given the military means to defend itself and negotiate from a position of power.
Zelensky explicitly stated, “Only peace through strength can bring results,” following a night of heavy Russian bombardment that struck a hospital. This quote encapsulates his entire strategy: he is not asking for weapons to achieve a total military victory, but to create the conditions for a just and lasting peace.
He uses the recent Gaza peace plan as an example, though in a nuanced way. While praising the diplomatic achievement, he implies that such deals are only possible when one side has sufficient leverage. For Ukraine, that leverage comes in the form of advanced air defense systems like the Patriot and NASAMS.
This message is directed at the US, Europe, and the G7. He is asking them to understand that their provision of military hardware is not an act that prolongs the war, but rather the most “reliable foundation for peace.” In his view, a well-armed Ukraine is the fastest path to the negotiating table.
Every Russian attack on a civilian target serves as another piece of evidence for his case. Zelensky is effectively telling the West: “Help us become strong enough to stop this, and then we can truly talk about peace.”
