Meanwhile, the lead U.S. trade negotiator has downplayed the potential impact of the ongoing trade dispute, suggesting that Canada would suffer more economically than the United States. Furthermore, he stated that there are currently no active trade negotiations taking place between the two nations.
The discord follows the breakdown of trade talks between the U.S. and Canada about a week ago, which led Washington to implement a 50% tariff on $20 billion worth of Canadian goods. In response, Canada, a major trading partner for the U.S., announced its own set of tariffs on $20 billion of American goods, set to be effective from September 8. Both Canadian and American consumers are expected to face the repercussions, including price hikes on everyday items.
According to the U.S. negotiator, the failed talks were primarily due to Canadian demands, such as reduced taxes on heavy-duty trucks, which he cited as a major sticking point.
