Ukraine has conducted one of its most extensive drone offensives against Russia since the conflict began, as reported by Russian officials, resulting in the deaths of at least six people and igniting a significant fire at a distribution center near Moscow. The Russian Defence Ministry stated that they intercepted 1,478 Ukrainian drones within a 24-hour timeframe, marking this as the highest number intercepted in a single day, though this information has not been independently verified. The mayor of Moscow, Sergei Sobyanin, mentioned that approximately 600 drones were aimed at the Moscow region, with 201 reportedly being destroyed. The region also reported one casualty.
A substantial fire erupted at a Wildberries distribution warehouse near Podolsk, around 25 miles from Moscow’s center. The facility, spanning about 250,000 square meters, suffered severe damage, rendering it inoperative, as stated by Ukraine’s military. Ukrainian forces have increasingly deployed long-range drones to target Russian military and economic sites distant from the front lines. Ukrainian authorities assert that multiple Wildberries-related facilities have been struck due to their alleged use in military logistics.
The incidents underscore Ukraine’s expanding capability in long-range strikes, while Russia continues to leverage drones and missiles to assault Ukrainian urban areas and infrastructure. Concurrently, Russian attacks resulted in the death of at least seven individuals in Ukraine, with fatalities in Kryvyi Rih and the Sumy region. A missile strike on Kyiv wounded six people and led to fires, including one at a prominent book market, where several businesses reportedly lost their entire stock.
Additionally, a Spanish fighter jet, involved in a NATO patrol, shot down a suspected Russian drone after it violated Romanian airspace, as confirmed by NATO officials. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused Russia of persistently targeting civilian infrastructure and claimed that over the past week, Moscow had launched more than 1,550 attack drones, nearly 1,560 guided bombs, and 62 missiles against Ukraine.
This escalation comes as both nations enhance their usage of long-range weaponry, amplifying the risk of casualties and destruction far from the initial conflict zones.
