Travelers planning long-haul trips between Sydney and New York can look forward to a more streamlined journey starting mid-2028. Qantas has announced it will launch nonstop flights for this route, cutting down travel time by approximately three hours compared to the current service, which includes a layover in Los Angeles.
This new direct flight option comes as part of Qantas’s ambitious Project Sunrise initiative, aimed at providing ultra-long-haul flights between Australia and significant global destinations without stopovers. The Sydney-New York service will follow closely behind the airline’s first nonstop Sydney-London route, scheduled to begin in 2027.
Operated using the Airbus A350-1000ULR aircraft, these flights promise comfort and innovation. The aircraft, ordered in a batch of 12 by Qantas, are equipped to handle journeys of up to 22 hours and will offer 238 seats across different classes, including first-class suites and premium economy. A unique highlight is the inclusion of a “wellbeing zone,” designed for passenger relaxation and exercise during the lengthy journey.
The tickets for this groundbreaking service are expected to go on sale in August 2027, although Qantas has yet to disclose the fares or the precise commencement date. The first of these advanced aircraft is anticipated to arrive in Australia in 2027, setting the stage for the airline’s expanded connectivity.
Qantas’s move to introduce nonstop flights between Sydney and New York marks a significant step in enhancing travel efficiency and passenger experience on long-haul routes, reflecting the airline’s commitment to innovation in air travel.
