Australia’s latest commitment to Ukraine is set to bolster defense and humanitarian efforts significantly, following Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s announcement of an additional $60 million support package. This move is part of a broader strategy to enhance security cooperation between the two nations amid ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
The fresh infusion of aid comprises $45 million allocated for Australian Defence Force equipment, $10 million directed toward Ukraine’s energy support fund, and $5 million in humanitarian assistance. This package raises Australia’s total support for Ukraine to approximately $1.9 billion since the Russian invasion began in 2022.
Announced during a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in New York, the support package coincides with a new 10-year bilateral security agreement between Australia and Ukraine. This agreement is set to increase military training collaboration and explore joint production opportunities for air-defense systems, missiles, and drones.
Albanese emphasized that Australia’s continued support underscores the importance of upholding international law, highlighting the global implications of Ukraine’s conflict. This sentiment was echoed by Zelenskyy, who welcomed the agreement for its potential to strengthen ties in security and trade between the two countries.
