President Trump’s plan for a Budapest summit with Vladimir Putin has faded, as the Kremlin announced Tuesday there is “no precise timeframe” for a meeting.
A US official, speaking anonymously, echoed this, stating there are “no plans” for a summit in the “immediate future.”
This contradicts Trump’s post from last week, where he claimed a meeting was just two weeks away. That announcement followed a call with Putin.
In response, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Monday in a call described as “productive.”
Despite this, the US official confirmed the summit was off the immediate agenda, adding a follow-up meeting between the diplomats was “not necessary.” This is the “latest abrupt shift” by Trump, who has acknowledged “frustrations” with Putin.
