At least eight people have been killed in what witnesses described as a “very strong explosion” in Delhi. The incident, a car blast near the Red Fort, also injured 19 people. One witness reported feeling shock waves in nearby buildings and saw “a hand on the road,” highlighting the sheer force of the detonation.
The blast occurred on Monday evening at a red light. Police Commissioner Satish Golcha said a slow-moving car had stopped at the signal outside the Red Fort metro station when it exploded. The resulting fire was substantial, “blackening and burning” more than a dozen other vehicles in the crowded street.
Dozens of fire engines and ambulances were dispatched to the scene. The 19 injured were transported to a government hospital. Another witness, Om Prakash Gupta, described the horrific aftermath: “I rushed out with my children and saw several vehicles on fire, body parts all over.”
The investigation is being led by the Home Ministry. Home Minister Amit Shah visited the site, stating the cause is not yet known. “We will investigate all angles with determination,” he said. The registered owner of the vehicle has reportedly been detained.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has offered his condolences to the victims’ families. In the wake of the incident, a high alert has been declared for Mumbai, the state of Uttar Pradesh, and large train stations across India.
