Bolzano, the capital of South Tyrol, is an enchanting city that seamlessly blends Germanic architecture and history with vibrant Italian culture and exceptional food. All of this is framed by the dramatic and spectacular peaks of the Dolomites, creating a truly breathtaking setting. Surrounded by picturesque vineyards and lush mountain plateaux, Bolzano is also celebrated for one of Europe’s finest summer music scenes.
For fans of jazz, the Südtyrol jazz festival, running from June 27th to July 6th, is a must-see event, boasting more than 50 concerts held throughout the region. Classical music enthusiasts will be captivated by the Bolzano Festival Bozen, scheduled from August 5th to September 7th. This festival features performances in some of the city’s most exquisite and historic venues, including the serene Dominican cloisters and the imposing 13th-century Castel Mareccio, promising an unforgettable cultural experience.
A significant draw for visitors to Bolzano is the opportunity to explore its magnificent scenery, which is at its most beautiful during the summer months. This can be done by walking along the city’s verdant greenways or by taking a scenic cable car ride up to the Ritten plateau, offering stunning panoramic views. The Guncina Promenade, a 2.8-mile (4.5km) walk from the city center, provides lovely vistas back across the skyline as it winds into the surrounding hills. From the 1,227-meter high cable station at Oberbozen, a network of diverse hiking trails unfolds, alongside the unique experience of riding South Tyrol’s only surviving narrow-gauge railway. A major historical attraction in Bolzano is Ötzi, the 5,300-year-old mummified iceman discovered by hikers in 1991, meticulously displayed at the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology.
For a comfortable and memorable stay, Goldenstern Townhouse (doubles from €149 room-only) is an excellent choice. Situated within the city’s medieval arcades, it offers a charming and convenient base for exploring Bolzano’s rich offerings and its spectacular natural surroundings.
