Heavy rainfall has battered New South Wales, with Sydney recording its wettest day of the year and large parts of the state facing dangerous flood conditions. River levels, full dams, and continued downpours have left many communities at risk, prompting hundreds of emergency calls.
Sydney recorded more than 80mm of rain in 24 hours, surpassing the city’s monthly average for August in just one day. Authorities warned that while the rain system is moving eastward, flood risks will persist into the weekend as water flows into river networks.
Tragedy struck near Wisemans Ferry, where two bodies were recovered after a car crashed into the Macdonald River. Police believe the victims were a father and his son. Several flood rescues were also carried out in the Sydney region and surrounding areas as roads became impassable and vehicles were trapped by rising waters.
Flood warnings remain in place for multiple rivers across NSW, with major alerts for the Namoi River and moderate risks for the Peel and Nepean. Officials cautioned that peak flooding could still occur over coming days. The floods follow earlier disasters in May, which left several dead and destroyed homes, prompting new government support for affected residents.
