Your Next iPhone Could Cost More: Trump Slaps 50% EU Tariffs, Threatens Tech Imports

by admin477351

Consumers may soon face higher prices for their beloved tech, as President Trump on Friday warned of at least a 25% tariff on imported iPhones, potentially starting in late June. This direct threat to the technology sector comes alongside a broader declaration of a 50% tariff on all European Union imports, effective June 1, stemming from his stated “patience” with trade negotiations running out.
Trump revealed he had personally warned Apple CEO Tim Cook about the consequences of manufacturing outside the United States, specifically mentioning overseas production plans. The clear implication is that any product not made on U.S. soil, including smartphones from Apple and potentially other major brands like Samsung, will be subject to significant new duties, directly impacting consumer costs.
This aggressive trade posture follows a brief period of eased tensions in early April, when previous tariff threats were temporarily suspended. Despite his own Treasury Secretary expressing hopes that this new threat would spur EU negotiators, Trump later contradicted this, stating definitively, “I’m not looking for a deal.” This suggests a determined shift towards imposing tariffs directly, bypassing lengthy negotiations, which could have a tangible impact on the price of everyday tech goods.
