A 1987 speech by Ronald Reagan is at the heart of a new US-Canada trade spat, which has culminated in president Trump terminating all negotiations with Ottawa.
An ad from Ontario used a clip of Reagan saying tariffs “hurt every American worker” to protest 35% US levies. Trump blasted the ad as “fake” and “fraudulent.”
He accused Canada of “egregious behavior” and meddling in US legal affairs. The move to suspend talks was confirmed by secretary of state Marco Rubio.
The ad has been disavowed by the Reagan Foundation, which said the “selective audio” “misrepresents” the full speech. In 1987, Reagan was justifying his own tariffs on japan while warning of broader protectionism.
The halt in talks creates uncertainty for the c$3.6 billion daily trade relationship, which Canadian pm mark carney has been trying to protect.
