In a significant shift for the Australian automotive market, electric and hybrid vehicles comprised nearly 50% of all new car sales between April and June 2026. This change highlights a consumer trend away from traditional petrol-powered vehicles, driven in part by the ongoing instability in fuel prices.
Battery electric vehicles (EVs) notably achieved a record market share of 21.03%, while plug-in hybrids captured 10.58% of the market. The sales of battery EVs saw a remarkable surge during this period, more than doubling from 34,435 units in the first quarter of the year to an impressive 69,414 units by the end of June.
In contrast, the market share for conventional petrol vehicles fell to a historic low of 50.84%. This decline aligns with expectations of rising fuel prices, following the cessation of the federal government’s temporary relief on fuel excise duties.
As the landscape of vehicle sales evolves, these figures highlight the growing consumer preference for more sustainable automotive options amidst fluctuating fuel costs. The trend suggests a significant transformation in the market dynamics, with electric and hybrid vehicles gaining ground as viable alternatives to petrol-powered cars.
