During a visit by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to Calgary, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney committed to enhancing Ukraine’s air defense and drone capabilities. This commitment is part of a broader C$350 million (US$253 million) support package through a US-led initiative aimed at supplying Ukraine with military equipment, training, and other defense resources. The announcement comes as Ukraine continues to face escalated missile and drone assaults from Russia.
In addition to military support, Canada has pledged C$450 million in loan guarantees to bolster Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. This financial backing is intended to facilitate repairs to facilities damaged in the conflict, increase energy storage capacity, and ensure reliable electricity supply to critical services, including hospitals.
Carney and Zelenskyy have also formalized an agreement to work towards a “hundred-year partnership” that will encompass collaboration in defense, critical minerals, energy, and other strategic areas. As part of this partnership, Canada has committed to directing 30% of its new domestic drone production to Ukraine. President Zelenskyy indicated that these drones would play a vital role on the battlefield, aiding Ukrainian forces and safeguarding civilians.
Looking ahead, Zelenskyy is anticipated to meet with US President Donald Trump in New York later this month, potentially during the United Nations General Assembly. This meeting is expected to further discussions aimed at revitalizing negotiations to bring an end to the ongoing war.
