Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan is embarking on a two-day visit to Canada, aiming to bolster bilateral relations, enhance trade, and deepen cooperation in energy and defense sectors. The visit will commence in Toronto, where Fidan plans to tour the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station, in an effort to delve into Canada’s expertise in nuclear energy. Turkish officials have underscored the significance of this visit as a reflection of Ankara’s interest in fostering collaboration in civilian nuclear energy and broader energy security initiatives.

While in Toronto, Fidan is also expected to engage with business leaders, academics, and civil society representatives to explore avenues for investment and economic collaboration between the two NATO allies. These meetings aim to identify and capitalize on potential opportunities that could benefit both nations economically.

The visit will proceed to Ottawa, where Fidan is scheduled to hold talks with Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand. These discussions are set to center on elevating the relationship to a strategic partnership, with a focus on increasing high-level exchanges and addressing trade barriers. Notably, progress on a long-discussed free trade agreement is anticipated to be a key topic of conversation during their meeting.

In addition to trade and bilateral relations, regional and global security issues are expected to feature prominently in the discussions. Topics will likely include the ongoing Russia–Ukraine war, tensions in the Middle East, and maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz. Turkey is expected to advocate for diplomatic solutions and stress the importance of continued engagement with all relevant parties involved in these issues.

The backdrop to these talks is a growing trade relationship between Turkey and Canada, bolstered by expanding defense cooperation, increased air connectivity, and the presence of a substantial Turkish diaspora in Canada. This visit represents a significant step in further strengthening the ties between the two countries, with potential benefits extending across multiple sectors.
