Voice Chat Getting Discontinued in Mac ChatGPT Desktop

Mac users face an upcoming change to their ChatGPT experience. Voice interaction through the macOS desktop application will be discontinued effective January 15, 2026. OpenAI described this decision in official update notes as necessary for focusing on more cohesive voice experiences across its platforms.
The removal is limited to the Mac desktop app only. Voice features remain fully operational through the ChatGPT website, accessible from any browser, as well as through mobile apps on iOS and Android devices. Windows desktop users also retain their voice capabilities. Mac is the sole desktop platform losing this functionality.
While OpenAI hasn’t provided comprehensive technical reasoning, the emphasis on unified experiences suggests considerations about architecture. The current Mac app’s voice implementation may not fit with broader strategic plans for voice technology. As voice becomes more prominent in AI services, standardization across platforms becomes increasingly important.
